This year’s spring rain and summer heatwaves have shown us what our future weather is going to be like due to climate change. We see the results all around us. The soil has been parched and the early harvest is predicted to be the worst on record. Farmers are using what would have been winter feed for their livestock. Heat stress has resulted in up to a 20% reduction in milk yields.
Nationally we have seen two thirds of England and the whole of Wales declared officially in drought, there has been transport disruption, hospital scanners shut down, unbearable temperatures in workplaces, and a government alert about wildfires. It has been estimated that the UK has suffered a £4.4bn loss of output. Our hospitals have been put under enormous strain and there have been nearly 2,900 excess deaths during the May- June heatwaves alone. Climate change is happening now. This is an emergency.
The 50minute People’s Emergency Briefing film is hosted by Chris Packham and sets out the implications of climate and nature breakdown for health, food systems, national security and the economy, and suggests measures that could reduce the risks. At the end of the film there will be time to discuss what we feel about the breakdown, actions that we can all take to reduce the risks and how we can encourage our politicians to undertake a national briefing as was done during Covid. Our MP, Sir Mel Stride, has been invited to attend.
Doors will be open at 6.30pm with the film starting at 7pm. Refreshments will be available.
