Woodland Management Group

We are working on a long term coppicing project in a beautiful mature mixed woodland at Moor Farm, near Morchard Bishop. We meet fortnightly from autumn through to the following spring.

Coppicing opens out areas of dense woodland and creates a broader range of habitats which in turn promotes greater diversity of fauna and flora. It also encourages regeneration of the coppiced woodland.

What We Do

Coppicing is the selective cutting down of woodland species as a means of harvesting timber and encouraging regrowth. We mainly cut hazel which responds well to coppicing. We also clear out holly which can be very invasive and smothering if left uncontrolled.

We work with hand tools only, mainly bow saws and loppers. No chainsaws.

Those of us who want it are free to take a share of the cut timber at the end of the season, for firewood.

Why It Matters

Apart from the benefits to biodiversity, working in the wood is a great way of keeping fit and active over the darker months of the year, meeting and making new friends, and helping to keep this lovely woodland in good condition.

How to Get Involved

New members are very welcome. No special skills or attributes are needed, beyond a reasonable level of fitness and mobility and having a grounded and careful approach to working safely with other members of the group. You will be asked to sign up the risk assessment for the project.

You don’t have to make a fortnightly commitment to come along and can drop in as and when other commitments allow. We can lend tools in the first instance and may be able to offer lifts to Moor Farm if you don’t have your own transport.
