We continue with our long term coppicing project at Moor Farm, near Morchard Bishop. We meet fortnightly through the darker days of the year: roughly between the two equinoxes.
We are working in a beautiful valley in a mature mixed woodland extending to around 50 acres. We coppice hazel, which has a number of benefits:
It rejuvenates the hazel stools and encourages new growth;
It opens up woodland glades to sunshine and dappled shade which increases the variety of habitats and is beneficial to butterflies and other beasties who like more open woodland;
Coppicing produces a good supply of firewood, which group members are able to have a share of, if they wish.
We are a sociable group who find plenty of time for coffee, picnic lunch and chat as well as being surprisingly productive! It's a great way to keep active and connected at a time of year when the hibernation instinct might otherwise take over.
