Share – Grow – Eat
The Seed Share is held at the end of February each year.
A seed swap works by people bringing seeds they have saved and taking away other people’s seeds to use. It doesn’t matter if you haven’t any seeds to bring though, it is hoped that by next year you will saved some seeds and bring them to the next seed swap, so please do come along. No charge, voluntary donations only.
In addition we invite stalls on topics related to growing and living sustainably, sell plants, have a lovely lunch where you can meet with friends and listen to local music so that the whole event is pleasant and welcoming.
What We Do
Everyone is welcome whether they have seeds to share or not. We hope that if you take seeds this year you will come back next year, having saved a few seeds yourself. If you have saved seed, please write the variety and year on a packet for example “Tomato Moneymaker 2011” or just “Tomato Cherry Type 2011” if you do not know the name. You can also bring seeds in commercial packets that you have not used, providing they are less than 3 years old. Come and find out how to save seeds – save yourself money, try new varieties and help save heritage seeds. During the year Sustainable Crediton holds events showing how to save seeds and grow plants.
Why It Matters
Saving seed from one year to plant the next is a traditional skill, practiced since man began purposely growing food to feed himself.
Today, seed swapping can:
- Help protect biodiversity and keeps the diversity of locally adapted varieties going
- Maintain growing skills
- Get round the National List, which makes it illegal to sell varieties not on the list.
- Seed swaps keep seed making in the garden and out of the laboratory and resists the privatisation of plant genetic material.
- Saving seed and seed swaps introduce you to other local gardeners and help develop a sense of community.
- Very helpfully, saving seed can also can also save you money
