Pollinator Project

The project has been running since 2019 and aims to provide habitat for bees, butterflies and many pollinating insects. The idea is to join up small plots in Crediton to provide a corridor for pollinating insects. The plots aim to provide colour and interest all the year round as well as food for insects and birds from early spring onwards.

What We Do

At the moment there are ten plots to maintain and we meet once a month on a Wednesday from 10 am until 12 noon. Sometimes we get together on other days, including weekends. It depends on the weather and what needs doing. Members of the group use their own tools and plants and compost are supplied regularly.

Why It Matters

Numbers of insects have declined over the past years due to habitat loss, exposure to pesticides and the climate crisis. ‘ If the invertebrates were to disappear, the world’s ecosystems would collapse ‘ David Attenborough. When we are working on the plots passersby often stop and chat and ask the names of particular plants and hopefully they will plant them in their own gardens. We have lots of chats and laughs when we are working and have even been known to adjourn for ice cream in the Market Square.
