Carolyn Scott and the Sustainable Crediton Waste Action Crew
created a unique and colourful flower garden out of waste plastic
bottles, tubs, carrier bags, cellophane and other plastic
bits and bobs at the Community Market in Town Square in June as
part of the Crediton Festival.
The sun shone on the market and on the sculpture which Carolyn
began at home using plastic bottles and carrier bags mostly
collected at waste plastic collection days, organised by
the Waste Action Group at Peck and Strong on the industrial
estate.
The sculpture was assembled and completed during the market
with the enthusiastic assistance of both young and old. It remained
in place in the Square for several days for everyone passing to
admire.
Carolyn commented ' people throw out plastic containers
after one use without much thought for what happens to the plastic
once their bins are collected. It is ''out of sight and out of
mind'' really. But plastic takes an incredible 500 years to
break down in landfill sites. It is a sobering thought that every
bit of plastic ever created is still in existence and will be for a
very long time to come. Our sculpture was a bit of colourful
fun aimed at making people think about how they handle their
rubbish a bit more. We hope Kirtonians enjoyed it and will make a
real effort to collect up and recycle their waste plastic as a
result of our efforts.'
The next waste plastic collection day takes place on Saturday
July 6th from 10am to 12.30pm at Peck and Strong, next door but one
to Eakers on the Crediton industrial estate.
