Waste Action Group Notes for 2012
The main WAGs group is a small band of
dedicated volunteers who hate waste and rubbish in all
forms and so work to minimise this in our local area to the limit
of our time and resources.
Many thanks go to Anne Tucker, Charles Mossman, Jill
Baines, Carolyn Scott and Esther Mann who are the mainstay of the
group and also to John Boyle and Nancy Dowling who have had to
leave us during this year due to other committments. Thanks also to
Chris Freeman and Jenny Hole who have helped with plastics
collections and anyone else who has leant a hand at our various
events.
We began the year with a series of Waste Plastics
collections at the recycling centre in Morrisons car park in
Jan Jun and July 2012. At these events we had a petition signed by
over 500 people asking Morrisions to install a permanent facility
in the parking area. This was sent to Morrisons HQ but ignored
by them as they did not want to co-operate. As a
result we decided to move location to a
neutral venue in January 2013. Our last two collections have
therefore taken place at Peck & Strongs in Lords Meadow
Industrial estate and although we feared this change of venue might
be problematic it has in fact proved very successful. Collections
at this venue will continue roughly once every two months until
January 2014. Our thanks go to John Peck and all the staff at Peck
& Strongs for allowing us to use this very suitable site. Each
household plastic waste collection has produced between half and
three quaters of a tonne of waste plastic which is collected from
us by Peninsular Waste Services of North Tawton for recycling.
Our thanks also go to them for offering this collection service
free of charge. As an experiment we also collected plastic
packaging in Cheriton Fitzpaine for a week prior to the event
earlier this month and 4 cubic metre dumpy bags were
collected, which we considered very encouraging for a
first attempt. We have found that by holding these
collections on a regular basis people are becoming used to
collecting their plastic for recycling and many are now taking it
direct to Punchbowl and Ashleigh recycling centres between our
events. The quality of the recyclate has also improved as people
come to understand what can and cannot be included.
In March 2012 we also held another very successful clothes swap
at the Boniface centre with over 150 people attending and approx
1000 items of clothing being swapped. This was our second
clothes swap and we will be holding a third in 2 days time on Sat
23rd March again at the Boniface Centre with a household goods swap
also included this year. The aim of these events is to extend the
life of useful clothing that may be langishing in the backs of
people's wardrobes and this year to give household goods a second
lease of life in a similar way. We have found that these events are
popular with a number of people who do not attend other Sus Cred
events and we hope that as a result our message is
spreading into a wider Crediton audience. Our thanks go to the
Sus Cred Food Group for their invaluable help with the catering at
these events, which has been not only delicious, but a major
contributor to the events being financially viable.
We also had discussions with Kevin Finan of MDDC in January 2013
regarding the possibility of plastics recycling in Mid Devon and
also extension of the other recycling activities carried out by the
Council. Mr Finan stated that no money was available for any
of this in the current economic climate although he was
sympathetic with our views. Mid Devon's current thinking on the
future of waste issues is to build a Energy From Waste plant at
Tiverton although discussions about this are still in their very
early stages. We told him that this would not be our preferred
route for dealing with waste issues.
Our final activity for 2012 was organising the recycling at the
Crediton Food Festival in June 2012. As well as keeping a great
deal of food packaging waste out of landfill at this 2 day event we
also had a real opportunity to educate the public about just how
much packaging can be recycled given some thought and organisation.
We will be undertaking the recycling at this event again in 2013.
We are hoping that our discussions with the organisers during
the past few months will mean that all the stallholders use
fully recyclable packaging for their takeaway food and drink in
2013. This could add greatly to the sustainability of the
event.
