Notes from WAGs meeting Monday Oct 1st at 3pm at Jills
house.
Present:Charles, Paula, Jill, Anne, Carolyn, John
1. Plastics
a. Phillippa Lausen from Winkleigh came to talk to us about their
plastics recycling scheme. We swapped ideas and experiences and
Phillippa is going to look into the possibility of getting
recycling credits for their group.
b. Morrisons
Since the previous meeting Morrisons staff at Crediton had told
Anne that we were no longer welcome to have plastics collections at
their store car park. No explanation was given.
This was discussed at length and it was decided that the
next step re Morrisons would be for Charles to write to Martin
Jones and Phillippa Hadfield at Morrisons HQ by email to get
confirmation of this and ask for reasons why.
Anne would then send off the petition to Morrisons at an address
confirmed by Charles keeping a copy for our records.
John would look into becoming a Morrisons shareholder with a
view to being able to attend write to Morrisons as a shareholder
and also attend an AGM and kick up a fuss!
Paula had written a draft press release re the results of the
scheme so far and Morriosons decision and All were asked to email
her their suggested changes and additions by Mon 8th October so she
could revise it.
c. Punchbowl/Ashleigh recycling Centres
Paula put forward the idea that we should be promoting
Punchbowl/Ashleigh as the places to take plastic from now on.
Charles pointed out last year less than 11 tonnes of plastic had
been taken to Punchbowl in the whole year. If we could increase
this the increase would be easily measured and would constitute a
success for the group with little to no cost or physical
exertion! Anne agreed to contact DSS about promoting
Punchbowl and ask how we can help.
d. Torbay/Unilever
Charles had heard nothing of use from Unilever yet.He will send
them our press release once it is ready.
John had made some useful investigations into how Torbay operated
their plastic collection scheme and confirmed that a portion of the
plastic recyclate is processed in the UK. He will continue
discussions with Torbay and report back any further useful
outcomes. He also reported on his recent trip to the Mechanical
Waste Recovery Facility in Exeter
e. Recycling Credits. Anne confirmed we have received about £150
in recycling credits for our 5 plastics copllection efforts.
2. Revision of Website
As time was short Paula asked everyone to look at the aims and
objectives she had prepared as a replacement for the existing
WAGs home
page and comment by email before the next meeting so an
update of the Home Page can be made in November.
3. Future Events
Paula & Charles reported on their recent visit to Honiton
Waste Not Want Not event. They had reached the conclusion that the
event was worthwhile but would require the collection and storage
of bric a brac in advance if we were to run an event on the lines
of the Honiton one. It would also require quite a lot of labour to
set up.
All were asked to think over whether they wanted to run this type
of WNWN event in the spring of 2013, repeat the Clothes Swap of
2012 or do a different event entirely and come to the next meeting
with some ideas.
4. Next Meeting
This will take place at Jills on Monday Nov 12th at 2.30pm.
