We are fortunate to have a doorstep black box recycling scheme
in the Crediton area.
One of the most popular things that we put in our black
boxes is plastic milk bottles. Perhaps I am stating the
obvious here, but the recycling lorries that empty those black
boxes must return to their depot in Silverton every time they are
full. Now here is an interesting question. What are they full of?
Well a lot of the time it is air!! Plastic milk bottles are very
light but very bulky and they take up an awful lot of space on
the lorry. So lots of fuel and time is being used up transporting
air to the recycling centre! And that folks is costing us
all money on our Council Tax. Crazy or what!!
So how can we help? Squash squash squash those plastic milk
bottles. Take off the lids and rinse them in the remaining warm
water at the end of your washing up. While warm they will be easy
to squash. Pop the lid back on straight away and they will
stay small. For the same amount of space that
every normal bottle takes up, at least 4
squashed milk bottles can be fitted on the
recycling truck. That means a lot less trips back to the
depot and so saves the crew time, the lorry
fuel and us money! Simples......
And please remember you can recycle all your other
plastic bottles too as well as other clean household plastics.
Sustainable Crediton holds regular Plastic Recycling Days at Peck
and Strong in Lords Meadow Industrial Estate from 10am to
12.30pm. See the Whats On listing for the next date. We welcome
nearly all the household plastics you can't put in your black
box as long as they are clean. And you can also take them to
Punchbowl Recycling Centre near Crediton. So now there is no longer
any need to throw the plastic from your supermarket shop
into your landfill bin. How great is that for the environment
and our pockets at the same time.
