A safe cycle route from Crediton to Exeter was the main talking
point at a meeting of Sustainable Crediton's transport group on
Wednesday 10 July.
The group combined business with pleasure by taking an evening
cycle ride from Crediton to Newton St Cyres, where they met in the
garden of The Beer Engine pub and heard from Devon cycling
campaigner Kirby James.
"We know how much local people want a safe route to Exeter by
bike, and Kirby gave us new enthusiasm for taking our campaign
forward", said transport group coordinator Laura Conyngham.
Among the ideas discussed were lobbying the Environment Agency,
which might be able to add a cycle path to the flood defence works
which are now being planned for the Cowley area. This would also
help plans for a cycle path to Tiverton, and Exeter cyclists. The
group also discussed a petition, perhaps based on a website.
"We are not the only group in Devon that wants a cycle path, of
course", said Laura. "There are very active groups elsewhere,
especially in East Devon. If we want our share of the money that
the County Council plans to spend on cycling, we need to
demonstrate real local enthusiasm."
The ride to The Beer Engine for the meeting was the second
organised this summer by Sustainable Crediton transport group, and
such was the level of support that a third has now been planned. It
will leave the Town Square for Newton St Cyres on Wednesday 21
August at 7.05 p.m. For more details see the events pages.
