There will be presentations from Jane Barham who has worked in a
Syrian refugee camp and David Mezzetti who is a Trustee for Refugee
Support Devon. The meeting will focus on what is going on
internationally but also what can be done locally to support
refugees and asylum seekers who come to Exeter and Mid Devon.
Also on what advocacy and lobbying might be helpful. There will be
opportunities for questions and stalls displaying some of the work
of the groups involved.
The meeting will be chaired by Rupert Poole, the Principal of
Queen Elizabeths College.
Whilst most of the refugees coming to Europe at present
are fleeing from conflict and oppressive regimes (eg Syria and
Eritrea), in the future we are likely to see 'climate change
refugees' as people escape from countries where there are droughts
and oppressive heat owing to global warming.
