Review of Woodland and Hedgerow Work Party 3/2017 to
Moor Farm, Nr Morchard Bishop EX17 6RX
Monday 6th Feb was postponed due to bad weather, we will
reconvene on the 13th. We shall continue to coppice in the woods at
Moor Farm.
At the start of the work party, Eddy reviewed his previous
Saturday's coppicing and charcoal making course. He showed us a
different was of coppicing to improve the chance of the stools
growing in the face of deer browsing. This entailed laying one or
two hazel stools along the ground to encourage root growth at the
points the stool conatcted the soil. The stool was held in place
with mini-crooks. At least one stem was left about 6 feet tall to
be out of the reach of deer. The laid stools were covered with
brash.
At least two of us tried out the new technique.
