Eddy Kay writes "Hedging at Zeal Monachorum. Brilliant clear frosty start, -3 deg C with a chilling North wind. The sun on our backs caused the shedding of scarves and jackets as work progressed. We had a nice run of hazel stools spaced 1 metre apart, affording a ready supply of steepers and all was going remakably well. A small flash of red sparks brought me back to earth. I had hit a stone between stems, not kind on the saw chain, .......... cutting efficiency greatly reduced. The saw being silenced, I heard the mewing of a buzzard, the chortle of fieldfares and a woodpecker drumming. We collected some of last years coppicing that had been left out in the wood. Exposure to the elements has caused some decay, it lacked weight and I suspect calorific value."
