Climate protest has taken many forms over the past few years.
It's left many of us wondering how it can be impactful, thought
provoking but not alienating, whilst avoiding the risk of arrest
for the majority who don't want to go down that road.
Some mass actions have resulted in considerable media coverage,
but also many arrests. More 'polite' forms of protest attract many
supporters but are ignored by the media and politicians alike,
since they don't suit their narrative.
So, what next? Climate activists in Bristol are turning to song,
and have formed the Bristol Climate Choir.
The website is to be rebranded to reflect the fact that climate
choirs are springing up nationally, including in Plymouth, Bath,
Swansea and elsewhere.
Actions so far have included at Barclays Bank AGM and at a rally
opposing the expansion of Bristol Airport. Singing protests can be
tailored to be as localised as you wish.
Protesting in song has a long and distinguished history and
draws attention in a way which is both non threatening and
heartfelt. It may be that there would be support for such a choir
in this part of Devon, and I am aware of at least one choir leader
in Exeter who has an interest. Should there be any developments,
I'll give an update here.
Otherwise if anyone wants to register an interest with me via
the link on this page, I'll keep you informed directly.
