Help needed for local wildlife project

2 March 2015

Crediton Town Council is asking gardeners to donate plants to a local wildlife project.

A project is well underway to transform a piece of waste land on the north east boundary of Peoples Park by planting easy to grow herbs, flowers and plants that attract and provide food for various forms of wildlife as well as for picking by residents.

Clare Dalley Town Clerk said "With the help of the local community the Town Council is building on the success of both the renovation of the Peoples Park Scout Memorial Garden and the Incredible Edible Garden project in Crediton Town Square. The project is progressing well, thanks to the enthusiastic help and support from all members of the community."

So far the area has been cleared courtesy of Community Payback, an unsightly corrugated fence has been painted courtesy of the Newton St Cyres Young Farmers Club, the laying of weed suppressing membrane has been carried out by members of the Crediton Incredible Edibles project, who have also started planting conservation hedging and fruit trees and woodchip has been kindly provided by Hooper Services.

Clare added "Help is also at hand from local school children who are making bug and bee hotels, it's all very exciting."

The Town Council is now asking residents if they can donate specific plants to the project, including, Elder, Raspberry, Butterfly bush, Flowering currant, Berberis, Winter flowering Honeysuckle, Mahonia, Holly, Bloody Cranesbill, Carex, Woodrush, Teasel, Cardoon, Chamomile, Honesty, Evening Primrose, Foxglove, Jacob's Ladder, Shield Fern, Sweet Cicely, Greater Celandine, Creeping Rosemary, English Bluebells, Cyclamen and Hart's- tongue Fern.

If you are able to donate any of the plants, or would like to get involved in the project, please contact Clare Dalley, Town Clerk on 01363 773 717 or e-mail townclerk@crediton.gov.uk
