Crediton Climate Action and Sustainable Villages ( a transition
initiative centred on Halberton and Sampford Peverall) combined to
create a stall for the Mid Devon Show. Our theme was Mid Devon in
Transition. We were rewarded amidst all the wet weather this July
with a lovely sunny day on the day of the show.
Our stall within a 3 metre market stall space comprised three
display panels with text and photos showing what we were doing
locally to transition to a low carbon lifestyle, a panel on how to
recycle plastics, two panels showing how the UK could
bring about an 80 percent cut in CO2 emissions by the year
2050, and a two panel chart comparing local people's carbon
footprints with the national average footprints of the USA, UK,
China, India and the UK's 2050 target.
We measured people's carbon footprints using the carbon
footprint calculator. Whilst the majority of the footprints
measured were below the national average of 11.5 tonnes CO2 per
annum we did find several people with much larger emissions. We
also had a quiz which had a prize on the day of a wind up/solar
powered radio - we'll give the answers out in the next newsletter.
Ken Orchard the chief executive of Mid Devon Community Recycling
helped man the stall for much of the day and answered many
questions received on recycling.
We had a massive surprise during the morning when the Show
judges arrived with a certificate and rosette to tell us we had won
second prize in the 7 metre frontage or less stall category. As
most stalls at the show were in this category we were delighted to
have done so well. According to the judges our stall was judged on
uniqueness, quality and interest of the content.
Thanks to Charles & Linda from CCA and Gill, Sally and
Peter from SV for producing the stall and several others who
also helped on the day (Tom, Mike, Ken and Paula).
