Greenham Reach Educational Project

1 June 2015

Greenham Reach, Devon is a ground-breaking project of three affordable mixed smallholdings. Each of the three households at Greenham Reach are trying to prove that it is possible to support themselves from under ten acres, off grid, working independently but co-operatively to produce food, medicine and plants for the local and wider community.

The smallholders at the site are setting up small businesses in vegetable, salad, fruit and mushroom growing, rearing rare breed livestock for milk, cheese and meat, an edible plant nursery and herbs for herbal medicines, using a diverse and ecologically sensitive approach to farming. They aim establish their livelihoods from the land and secure permanent permission for their households by 2018, and help this unique model to spread more widely across the U.K.

WHAT YOUR SUPPORT CAN HELP US DO

Many other potential small scale farmers are keen to visit and learn from what is happening at Greenham Reach, as well as schools, local people, families and groups. Education is at the core of the projects resilience, in making and strengthening local links and in growing the movement of sustainable small scale farming by providing opportunities for learning practical skills. Your support can help us build on the common resources that support the smallholders, visitors and volunteers.

We want to create a lively hub on the common land which can be used as a central meeting place for everyone, providing shelter, toilets, washing and cooking facilities for school visits, open days, work weekends, courses and volunteers. To do this we need to increase the water harvesting capacity, build simple shelters on common land, and off-grid hand washing, shower and toilet facilities for visitors and volunteers.

We aim to create a shared kitchen and basic processing space to support visitors, volunteers and the smallholders in the beautiful timber framed common barn and also want to improve the access to the site with paths, a turning circle and extend the track that links common facilities, farming activities, dwellings and volunteer accommodation, and shelter for bicycles.

WHAT WE'RE ASKING FOR

This means that every pound that you donate is doubled if we can meet our first milestone of £4,500.

We appreciate anything that you can donate to support us - money - even just £10, time,, materials, equipment, skills. There are plenty of ways that you can support us to make this happen and help turn an amazing project into an incredible one. We are well on our way but we need your help!
