Plans for Plough & Share's new access point in the town,
coordinated by Sustainable Crediton, are right on track following
our public meeting on 12 July.
Over a dozen people have now volunteered to help actively with the
project - and there are plenty of other supporters. Seven people
will attend two days' training at Plough & Share's offices in
Okehampton on 23 and 24 August.
We expect to announce a date for starting the service soon, and
look forward to welcoming old and new customers to our Saturday
morning sessions in the Fire Station Community Room in Charlotte
Street.
It's not too late to join us! We need more volunteers to
help run the access point, and to do outreach work. So please get
in touch if you want to help, or just be kept in touch with what's
going on.
And did you see the lead story in the Western Morning News on 4
August - 'Horror story of debt in West'? Here's a quote in it from
Steve Meakin, money advice coordinator for the Citizens Advice
Bureau in Devon and Cornwall about payday lenders: "The explosion
of this type of lending has been absolutely astronomical. The
problem is that you can be tempted by something in a shop window,
tap into an app on your smart phone and 20 minutes later the money
is in your bank. It's that quick".
According to the Consumer Credit Counselling Service, Devon is
the county with the third highest level of insolvencies in the
country. So access to responsibly offered credit is badly needed
here. And a Credit Union does just that.
