I was glad to join with Councillor Giles Fawssett and about 20
others for a morning stroll on Sunday 17th November 2024. The
intention was to observe local trees on a path in Crediton. With
the help of Crediton Town Council this walk was publicised as part
of the development of a tree warden network in the area. Our walk
began at The Green near to Queen Elizabeth Upper School and
progressed up Greenway and along the path (some know as Tinpot Lane
and others as Stoneypark Lane) to the Lower School.
We were delighted to welcome Ed Dolphin from the Sidmouth
Arboretum who gave us lots of interesting facts about tree species
and identification. We found some glorious autumn colour in
ornamental trees around the Green and Queen Elizabeth School
entrance, such as sweet gum (Liquidambar styraciflua) trees. And
along the path we noted native species of blackthorn, elder,
hawthorn, hazel, holly, oak and more. Some good views were seen
along the way both across the town and over the countryside. As we
walked we also talked about issues of tree management and future
residential developments. Thanks to Ed we also have found a way in
which we could record individual trees using Google Maps. If you
would like to get involved then see the links below.
