Sustainable Crediton Newsletter Issue 28

Photograph of a newly planted tree in a field

With Autumn leaves falling, welcome to the November newsletter, which has a strong tree and hedgerow feel to it this month! You can do your bit for trees and hedges this month in three ways.

Firstly, I'm sure we all want a strong future for our woods and trees. Statistics for the Devon show that the county is among the best in the country for woodland cover at 19.2% compared to the national average of just 10%. But better protection is needed to safeguard Devon's existing woods and trees. In the last ten years, eight precious ancient woods have come under threat from development. The Woodland Trust's latest campaign is our campaign of the month. Please take a couple of minutes to email the Secretary of State for the Environment and your MP.

Secondly, if you have space in your garden or land why not plant a Dutch elm resistant elm sapling or some other tree during National Tree Week?

Finally, the Energy Group are holding a woodfuel from hedgerows event on the 24th November. The idea is to form a group which will manage a hedgerow in a traditional manner for the benefit of the hedge, wildlife and to harvest wood to burn at home. The event will be of interest to people who burn wood for heating their home, for farmers wishing to learn how to manage their hedgerows for wood and nature, for people wanting some winter fresh air and exercise as part of a wood group and for people wanting to learn new skills such as hedge laying. Spaces are limited, so booking is essential.

And three plugs for actions needed at the start of the month. There is a public meeting tonight 7pm 1st November  on cycling in the Crediton area, an opportunity to learn how to be more influential on the 7th November and it is the final chance to get involved in the Energy Group's Warm Homes Project.

Definitely the last thing I'll mention is your opportunity to get involved in Crediton's new Community Bookshop through its share launch on the 17th November.

Theres lots more going on, so please read on and click deeper into our website.
